Certificate in Introduction to Urban Humanitarianism

Course Overview

By 2040, 45 billion(almost 50 percent of the world’s population) are projected to live in towns and cities of low-income countries. Within the urban settlements, almost half of the population is likely to live in informal settlements. Whilst presenting their inhabitants with an array of opportunities, informal settlements are often located in hazardous areas, lacking access to basic services, and highly vulnerable to a range of risks.

Providing sustainable protection for displaced people in urban areas will mean engaging politically with municipal authorities and integrating people of concern into urban governance systems. Increasingly, these populations also include refugees or those displaced by conflict, natural disasters and other drivers. One of the foremost challenges in protecting displaced populations beyond camps is the difficulty of improving protection for the displaced without building unsustainable and potentially problematic parallel systems of service delivery
